QWERTY and the invention of the Typewriter
The first practical typewriter was invented by Christopher Latham Sholes with help from Samuel Soule and Carlos Glidden in Kleinsteubers machine shop in Milwaukee. Further improvements and the relentless drive and financial backing of James Densmore, who bought into the invention in 1867, led to the creation of the QWERTY keyboard in 1873. Sholes was a two time Wisconsin State Senator, one time Assemblyman and was instrumental in Wisconsin’s abolishing the Death Penalty. The use of the typewriter as a writing instrument of the masses is no more, but as long as there are keyboards - the QWERTY keyboard will live on. C L Shole’s daughter, Lillian, became the worlds first professional typist.
