Vaudeville Kingpin, Broadway and Hollywood character actor, Charles Winninger, was born near Wausau and raised in Appleton. He was a child in a family of working thespians and lived the life of constant touring while growing up. Later, as a young man, he lived in Milwaukee. He is identified with the role of Captain Andy in fellow Appletonian Edna Ferber's long running Broadway musical, SHOWBOAT - considered by many to be the first true Broadway musical (Drama driven by lyric and music as opposed to a show built around a review of new songs.)

He went on to play for the Chicago Cardinals. “Harder became the first player in league history to score over 100 points in three consecutive years, which he did from 1947–1949, leading the league all three years.
