Francis Wallar Captures the Flag

Francis Ashbury Wallar of De Soto, Wisconsin is pictured taking the flag of the 2nd Mississippi on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions that day. Wallar served in the 6th Wisconsin regiment of the Iron Brigade, he preferred to be called Frank and was not a man to be trifled with. Wallar would return home after the war and become the Sheriff of Vernon County. Painting by Don Troiani.
